Plants to Watch out For

We all know about the posion ivy plant especially if you are sensitive to it as I am. It can take many forms. It can grow very tall, it can be a vine that grows up a tree or even be a small ground cover. It has berries that grow on the stem which is a good identifying feature. It has three leaves as opposed to the five leaves of the plant Virgina Creeper which grows in the same places. The leaves turn bright red in the fall.

Nettles

Be careful when brushing against the nettle plant. It can be tricky to identify in the spring but you will feel it. It stings! Usually a Yellow Dock plant grows near it. Chew up a Yellow Dock Leaf and apply it to the stinging part. Plantain leaves work also.

Hog Weed.

The sap of this plant produces a terrible burn like rash. Be very careful when removing it from a field. The rash looks like a burn and it takes a long time to go away.

Bull thistle.

Bull thistle has some serious thorns. Be careful when walking around fields. Many people think this is a nettle plant because it can hurt when brushed against. There are many thistle plants but this is one of the more common ones that grows around here.
